CHARACTER INTERPRETATION
» Appearance:
The irony of Rick and Shane being partners is that the two of them are physically polar opposites. Rick is long and lean compared to Shane. Shane is compact and powerful, built lower to the ground like a boxer of sorts. With a much larger that normal nose he has farmers hands, a legacy of working on the land. Shane is brawn to Rick's brain, moving with more power behind his punches as opposed to longer and smoother strides.
Shane, prior to the events of his canon point has curly hair, almost permed. He eventually shaves it, symbolizing his detachment from convention and his embracing this brave new world that they're all living in. If anything everything about Shane's transformation relates to the new world and he is the first in the group to fall victim to it. He abandons wearing T- Shirts more readily, he is more prone to violence, as the second season progresses he detaches more and more from the old reality to embrace the newer one and he does so without mental ramifications.
While Rick, who follows that same road in season 3, misses the things that he left behind, Shane doesn't He is a predator and moves like one and treats others like other predators. His adaptation to the island and a life of seeming luxury is going to be more difficult.
» Suitability: N/A
» Orientation:
Heterosexual There's never been any question about Shane's heterosexuality. He is firmly interested in members of the female sex to the point of almost being a womanizer. While his interest in women doesn't change during the course of the series, his womanizing directs specifically at Lori Grimes - his best friend's wife. By the end of his run in the series, despite sleeping with Andrea (who he manipulated) Shane was firmly "Lorisexual", meaning that he was interested in Lori and was willing to keep her and Carl his.
» Personality
Shane Walsh is described as a loose canon, as someone reckless and someone who adapts to the brave new world a little too easily. Joss Whedon once said however, that you can never know a man until you see him at his weakest moments. Shane is brought to his knees at least three times during the series and we learn that he is loyal, ready to kill for those who he wants to protect. We learn that he's always had a reckless streak, that when compared to others in his profession perhaps he does it for the wrong reasons. We also learn that he loves deeply and perhaps feels isolated and alone. The biggest thing however is that Shane is a product of his environment and the world he lives in. He is a different man then the one we see vaguely at the beginning of the series, going from a man who is a decent person to a man who is willing to kill his best friend and steal his best friend's wife not out of malice or hating him but because he feels that he can protect them better.
That's the tragedy of the Walking Dead. When civilization is stripped from a human being the question of where will they go and what will they become is paramount on the human mind. Society is a construct and there are some people who are willing to build it and some people who can function just fine without it. Shane is one of those people, someone who is willing to murder to get something that he wants. Had he been allowed to live it's difficult to predict how he might have regressed further, but while Rick's time on the barge would be impressed with the amenities,
Shane is inherently loyal and a decent human being. In the beginning he cared about his best friend a great deal and he holds him in high esteem. His initial feelings about the man's wife are there, they did and do exchange glances occasionally but when the chips are down Shane wants to get him out of there or at least try to. When he realizes that he can't he assumes the most logical conclusion (that Rick had died). The concept of "assumptions making an ass out of you and me" cannot exist in an apocalyptic wasteland. Shane clearly acted in Rick's best interest knowing that Lori and Carl deserve to live.
The biggest relationship is between Shane and the Grimes family. Shane was a welcome guest in the Grimes home with he and Rick quietly ribbing each other and Shane performing basic tasks around the house. Shane had a close relationship with Carl, Rick's son and had a relationship with Lori as well that was friends bordering on polite interest. When the world ended they came together and Shane, immersed in the destruction realizes that they were important and that he missed out. As he tells Rick, "I thought I was keeping them alive but they were keeping me alive." It's the truth. All of his life he lived with isolation and when he realized what was really important he decided that he'd have the will to fight for it.
How he fights for it is another story entirely. Shane begins the second season recognizing the wrong that he did and deciding to leave. Not happy about it, his sense of understanding devolves into self pity. Outside factors don't make it easy for him to accept Rick's attitude or behavior. Shane has put himself into a position of protecting Rick's family and Shane takes that seriously. The threat of losing that and recognizing that he who thought he had everything actually has nothing is a huge motivator for him. He wants to keep that. Beyond that he starts to lose even more when Rick begins to distance himself from him.
Shane is not the sort of man to accept this without trying to fight for what matters to him. He tries to do this through the more commonly accepted means of trying to get people in the group to listen to him (lying and manipulation) then as he devolves further he becomes more and more physically violent. Shane sliding down shows the group that it's not impenetrable.
The reasons behind his abusive treatment of Lori has to do with his sense of isolation and inability to deal with his own screw ups. His own acknowledgement that - in short his life was wasted. Hence his irrational attachments. (something that even Rick recognizes. "You don't love her, you just think you do.") a good idea would get him to find somebody to care about, but that may not be entirely possible. He degenerates into a manipulative individual which quickly escalates to violence.
Hence his reaction to Rick returning. The two of them swim in the oldest fight known to man - my mate versus yours. Shane is an alpha male, someone who wants to take charge without the civilizing aspect. He's dangerous when things that he wants to take care of are taken away, hence his ultimate reaction and his ultimate downfall.
He is ultimately a good man in service to bad causes, the first person to embrace the changes in the world, and a man who realizes just what he missed out on.

[In which Shane tries to get answers violently and tries to get help...not so violently.]
[Atia, it's that time again. The time when newcomers arrive on the island. Here's one now, the downside is he doesn't particularly understand what's going on.
This is a huge problem actually.
When the feed clicks on, yeah okay here's Shane, sans pants wearing a collar with his gun in hand and...a maid in the other.]
This isn't heaven.
[His teeth grit] If this were heaven I wouldn't need to have my damn gun.
[He's disoriented enough however that he lets her go with one hand - probably setting the record for the quickest evacuation from the palace in the history of the island. Gun however does not get lowered.]
I wanna know, where the fuck I am, and why the fuck I'm here. [And why none of you are dead.]
---
[Hey look Atia. Remember the crazy yet incredibly attractive guy? He's back. His collar, a simple leather one appears to be causing him some discomfort however.]
...There's no time for this back home.
...All of this shit. And suddenly you people want to make it last? [he pauses] It's...it's warm here and everyone and everything seems to be alive.
[He places emphasis on the word alive before looking thoughtfully at his hands]
...I'm not one for small talk though. I could use some company of a preventing my death type. I ain't aiming to die a second time.
» Third Person Sample Choice: [Arrival - be all my sins remembered.]
He woke up with the name on his lips. Lori. Which was funny because he hadn't been thinking of Lori he'd been thinking of Rick and honestly how maybe he could come back into the fold somehow and try this again at a later date. Or at least make the group see reason, Rick had tried to kill him but -
No. No that wasn't it. That wasn't nearly enough...and...and then everything drifted away and his best friend's anguished cries left him and he was suddenly at peace which was weird in and of itself because he had fully expected a state of dulled awareness and a never ending hunger. Those things came, tore at him, tore him to pieces but the rest of it...
He felt cooling hands and saw Lori smiling beneath him, that wicked grin he'd liked so well.
Once, early in his career he had convinced Rick to buy some fancy smelling jasmine perfume for Lori as a valentine's day present. Rick was hopeless with women and had relied on Shane when it came to material matters of the heart because he had more experience with gestures then actual actions. Shane hadn't realized it then, he thought gifts were heartfelt and he took Lori wearing that even until the damn thing ran out during their run from Atlanta as a sign that they had always been something. Had something.
He smelled that now, reclining on clouds. Stirring, he sat up, sat back down and realized he was half hard. ...The hell'd...
This was not Atlanta. This was not the farm, this was...I don't deserve to be here.
Instantly instantly the thought of Rick, Lori, and Carl swam into focus and his half erection died and nothing - not even those jasmine scented sheets could bring it back. Sitting up, he examined the room warily before he found his jeans - folded up on the nightstand and sitting on top of them...
Heaven lets you have guns?
Maybe his heaven. Maybe heaven with lots of hunting and turkey shoots but heaven with silk sheets? With the memory of women that weren't yours?
This wasn't right. Shane put a hand on his head and slid it down his cheek, trying to think before his fingers crossed over a leather band, a thick one wrapped around his neck. Standing up, he crossed the room to one of the mirrors to examine it. He picked at it, turning it around in his fingers...nothing. No way to get it off.
...Well if there was one thing the world had taught him. Foraging was essential. He'd find scissors later. Scooping up his gun and jeans he hesitated before searching the room for weapons. Nothing, no chairs or tables even to be broken up into makeshift bats. A small communicator rested next to his clothes no shirt, (and wasn't that interesting?) but he'd gotten used to that before and the air was pleasant. No winter here.
He needed information. Tucking the communicator in one pocket and the gun in the front of his jeans he slammed the door on his way out. God, if you're there. I mean I believed in you but you'll forgive me if I don't give two shits about you deciding not to bring me back as one of those things. You're an awful supreme being and If I find you here you can bet I'm making you take me back.
Lori and Carl swam in front of his eyes, a vision so powerful he nearly stumbled. Yep. you can bet I'm taking you down.
He had people waiting.
